CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

I’d just stepped out of the shower when Ash called. My heart dropped into my guts as he told me what happened. Arsen was on the run. Out there somewhere in a shaky mental state, headed God only knew where. Ok, that wasn’t entirely true. I could track him.

Ash offered to help me search for Arsen, but what could he really do? That damn dragon had flown away. He could be anywhere. Not on the other side though. I’d have felt that. Maybe he went home.

In record time I ran a brush through my wet hair and shoved my legs into a pair of jeans before cramming a t-shirt over my head. I struggled to get my arms through the holes while also shoving my phone into my pocket and cramming my feet into running shoes. The door slammed behind me. The brief seconds it took to jam my key in and turn the deadbolt still felt agonizingly long.

Throwing myself into my Jeep, I turned the engine and gunned it out of the parking lot. Not knowing where else to start, I drove toward Arsen’s house. In my mind I reached out for him, for that link I could always feel when I focused on it just right. I felt him now. Not close but not that far either. He may have a good head start but he couldn’t escape me. Just like I could never escape him.

The closer I got to his house the further away he felt. Maybe he knew that was the first place I’d look. Or maybe he wasn’t thinking about any of that at all and was merely operating on instinct.

Ash said that Arsen lost his shit and tore out of the basement after hearing Caspian make a threat against me. I didn’t hate that part. But if Arsen was in a crazed state, running amok as the dragon, he would be a threat to other people.

My mouth went dry when I thought about The Circle of the Veil and their reaction if Arsen went off the rails and slaughtered an innocent person. Would he do that? There was no way of knowing. Until last night I never thought I’d purposely goad a vampire into chasing me down like prey.

Frustrated and overwhelmed, I pulled over outside a busy coffee shop. I needed a moment to think. My brain fired off too many concerns at once, making it hard to concentrate on Arsen.

Tuning out the bustle of people on the sidewalk, I closed my eyes and thought about my twin flame. I didn’t understand how the bond between us worked, but I knew that it did, and I could rely on that. Taking several calming breaths, I let my mind wander.

Something tugged inside of me, an invisible cord that would take me right to my dragon. My eyes snapped open, and I put the vehicle in drive, following the pull. I left the busy streets where people enjoyed the night life, entering residential streets that got sleepier and quieter by the block.
